Artist Statement

There are species like birds that are just as diverse, territorial, and social as the human population and we watch them because we see humanistic traits that make them interesting. By spinning this imagery, I want to bring this other world inside to shape how people look at it when they walk outside. While mosquitos suck the good graces out of me, fireflies remind me of childlike innocence and surprising joy when they light up the world. These instances create fantasies in my mind, but they all come from a voyeuristic perspective. Humans especially learn by watching in curiosity. Across cultures, animals and plants bring in countless fairytales and iconography that invokes either a lesson or feeling. By capitalizing on stories that are well known, I can show that there is just as much power and impact animals have on humans as we do on them. Humans are not exempt from nature, instead perhaps we are not special but a part of a greater anamalic society.
